Mac's will host an event to debut Sweet Memories, a deck of 52 oversized cards that pose questions meant to inspire fun, moving, and engaging conversations among grandparents, grandchildren, children and friends. The questions in Sweet Memories range from light-hearted to serious, and can prompt memories and stimulate conversations of very different sorts. Some questions are just for fun: "What games did you and your friends play as children?" Some questions will likely bring about thoughtful conversations and self-reflection: "What makes you smile when you think about it?" Some questions are more challenging and are intended to bring about conversations that are helpful and healing: "What is the most difficult part of your day?" While Sweet Memories covers a wide range of events and experiences and may be used by everyone, the cards focus on people whose independence and mobility have been compromised. They are particularly beneficial for visiting nursing home residents, extended-stay hospital patients, and people who are housebound. Sweet Memories creator, Neil Slobin, describes how the deck came to be: "Several years ago, a very close friend of mine – who was the mother of a very close friend – began a swift decline in health, precipitated by a serious stroke. I visited her frequently in hospital and then, as she continued to decline, in a nursing home. While she had the ability to speak and to participate in conversations, she was, as is not surprising, bored, depressed, and agitated. One day while visiting, we ran out of things to talk about and I left in a fairly short while. On my way home – and in my own agitation and frustration at striking up a conversation – I thought, Wouldn’t it be nice if there were questions that one could reach for, that one could ask the person you were visiting? When I arrived home, I wrote down some questions that I thought would be fun and interesting and appropriate for people of my friend’s age, who was born in the 1920's. As the idea matured – with the essential and irreplaceable aid of co-creator and designer Russell Stephanchick, and with the help of many many friends – it developed into the unique deck of cards and questions that we have named Sweet Memories" (Neil Slobin)
